Chen Village Push Hands Competition
Master Ren Guan-Yi and the International Chen Style Taijiquan Asociation present for the first time on video Chen Taiji Push Hands taped live from the 5th Annual Wenxian International Taijiquan Conference held in August 1998 - the last competition of last millennium. Taijiquan as it is trained in China differs vastly from the way it is practiced in the West and the image held by the Western public of the art as a gentle health exercise. Here you will see "real" competitive push hands, the martial art of Taijiquan. The competitors exhibit sensitivity, rooting, and explosive power (fajing) as they sweep, trip, throw, and push. The essential energies of Taijiquan ie Warding, Rolling, Pressing, Pushing, Grasping, Splitting, Elbow striking and shoulde striking are employed. Many of the techniques rendered by Masters Ren and Chen Zi-Qiang are shown in slow-motion for the viewer to appreciate and study. Also included in this tape is a trip through Chen Village (the birth-place of Taijiquan) to see the training hall and villagers practicing, the ancient plaques and tombstones denoting Taijiquan's history and evolution, and Yang Luchan's courtyard (where he learned Taijiquan before spreading the art throughout China), as well as an internview with Chen Xiaowang (19th generation Chen family head) and a rare demonstration by him.
