Although Shaolin monks seldom carried edged weapons, they trained with them to become familiar with their properties in case they had to fight against them. The Broadsword was a common military weapon since it was relatively easy to learn and wield proficiently. It is said that the Broadsword should attack ferociously “like the wild mountain tiger.” Known as the “Marshall of all weapons,” the Broadsword is included with the Staff, the Spear, and the Straight Sword as one of the four basic weapons of northern styles. 40 minutes
