Silver Willow Leaf Saber
The “Weng dao”, meaning bent or curved single edged sword, is a very common weapon for the military to carry as the side arm on foot or on horseback. The workmanship of the sword usually is an indication of the rank of the owner. This sword has extremely fastidious cast brass fittings, but most significant aspect of this sword is the blade. The blade was forged by hand into facet cross-sections. The consequence is that it makes the sword lighter while still being able to hold its chopping strength. This is an extraordinary piece that has museum exhibition quality! Single deep and well-formed fuller runs length of blade. Blade is facet cross-section shape indicating origin in the mid to early 18th century. It is a nicely shaped heavy blade and very clean with light discoloration, no pitting and no nicks. Hardened edge and active pattern are visible. The scabbard is of a ‘cracked’ black lacquer, the hilt of dark brown ‘cracked’ lacquer. Overall Length: 35 inches
