original tiger crane form

Postby mr_S11034 on Tue Jan 25, 2011 11:07 pm

I have in wikipedia  that the tiger crane form that we see now is a recoreographed version of the form. I was wondering if anyone has seen the original version of the form and if there are any videos on it. I am just curious of what it used to look like and why he felt the need to change it.

The question if the tiger and crane form has been changed from the original form depends on who you believe. According to Sifu Wing Lam the form was created by Wong Fei Hung. I believe, but I am not sure about this, that this reflects the opinion of the Chiu Kao branch of Hung Gar. According to Lam Sai Fai, the son of Lam Jo and representative of the Lam family of Hung Gar, the tiger and carne form was created by the founder of the style Hung Hei Gung. According to the Lam family the form was re-choreographed by Wong Fei Hung. Now take your pick what you believe.
In any case the tiger and crane form we learn today was created by Wong Fei Hung with minor differences between the different Hung Gar branches.
That also answers the question if a video exist of the form before it was re-choreographed. No video exists. At that time the photo camera had been just invented.

As you said yourself therevis no way of knowing the truth. Every family branch have their own thoughts and opinion abouth the set. And we cant know whatsvthe original and what has changed during the years. What i like to do is to look at the different linages, se how they performe it and look for the elements that correspond between all of them.
My sifu once told me when i asked abouth the origin of the sets and if they had never been altered that sets are living beings they will change to suit the practitioner but the cora and frame of the set will still remain.
