A true american shaolin temple...

Postby Omaronim on Mon Jun 07, 2004 4:33 pm

Why don't the handful of Shaolin monks that are in the US to promote Shaolin get together (solve their differences and so forth) and form a 'true' Shaolin temple instead of these training halls they got set up? True the amount of monk material is low in this area of the world but I'm sure there would be some dedicated indiviguals who would join. I certainly don't mean the contemporary wushu temple they got set up right now in China, I mean the old school practical, combat oriented, chan oriented temple of old. And who knows, why they're at it they might as well add Bak Sil Lum to the cirriculum. :P

Edit: Hmmm, they could also take in Hung Gar too.

No one seems to have much of anything to say about my idea. Oh well. :(

It does sound like a good idea, but there would be zoning laws, money problems, and where would they put it?

Aren't there them kind of problems with every new large building?

They could always do most of the construction themselves, they could also farm and such kind of like permaculture. Just ideas.

As crazy as this sounds, this is similar to what I had in mind for my martial arts school later on.

Here is my plan:
I want to open a school in the city of course to get some students. During the summer I want to have a school in the country for people who wish to go to more rigorous training. It would be like kind of a summer camp thing. They would stay at the school and do common chores such as landscaping and building equipment for training.

I am sure that there are schools like this already but I haven't come across them yet and it sounds like a really good idea.

Are there any of of those old school kwoons in the USA? Like those in the movies where select students live at the school, doing chores etc, and of course learning Gung fu. It would be wonderful if the kwoon had tradition Chinese architecture as well.
~sigh, Im just relating a fantasy.

i know there is a training camp sort of thing going on for ninjitsu and to me it looked really fun to go to. if wing lam had that, it would be a very interesting and very fun experiance. i forget where the training camp is set but after training and such you eat, get cabins or tent(cant remember) and apply online and such. after i type this out though i will be searching the internet for camps for kung fu and see if there is any and doing so in the future :D

The .com.au thing would make it seem like it is in Australia. ;)

Sifu Chan Pui had (has) a school in Florida and at one time did have live-in students. His daughter Mimi Chan is a delightful girl (lol, woman now).

I have no idea what the status of Master Chan's school is today.

I have become convinced that Disney can pull this off. "The 36 Chambers of Shaolin" can be the next great theme park. We can all work and live there, operate rides during the day, and train in our off hours. It should be built just like in the movie, only with more amenities for the visitors who'll pay a lot of money to support our martial lifestyle. The 2nd chamber - where the monks carry water up an incline and pour down the slide - can totally be a water ride. There will be kung fu and lion dance demos on the grounds, and photo ops with Shaolin Princess and the Seven Monks.
