wooden dummy arms

im building a wooden dummy. low buget. i need arms. anyone know wear i could get decent ones for around $80 or less.

You could try sneaking into a school's woodshop and milling them yourself with a band sander.

Recycle, go to your local dump and find some wooden chairs. Take the legs and Presto! If the guy tending the dump charges you $80 or more I'll be very surprised.

Yeah, goto your local fence company. Buy the round post and rail set-up. Or you can round off a 2X4. I kinda like the fence idea better. If you pick up a hole saw, you can drill new holes in the post to simulate more Arm Postions, making something closer to what you see for sale in magazines.

Whatever you do build it 'bullet-proof', I've made too many training aides only to have them fall apart after a short amount of time.

Most of the others have brought some good ideas. The only others I know are PVC. And Taking three Lousivlle sluggers (baseball bats) and turning them into arms, I've seen this done once and looked rerally good.

I don't think that PVC would be good for striking. The baseball bat idea is good, but if you mean maple bats you might break them too easily.

I once made a dummy out of a fence post, too. I went to a local furniture shop and asked for some of their scraps for the arms. When they found out what I was doing, one of the guys offered to mill the short pieces down a bit. That saved me quite a bit of rasping and sanding, but they didn't do any of the finishing for me. I didn't ask, iether. By the way, I do not advise using concrete to set a dummy in the ground if you rent.
I also made a forearm conditioning tool out of a ladder once, kind of like a four sided makiwara. I'm a little bit insane, though. Around the time I was making the forearm "thingy", my mother noticed I was missing a fingernail. She asked me how it happened. For about 3 weeks, I had been spearhanding the ice field behind our house trying to pull out a chunk of the frozen dirt under the ice and snow. I had been succeeding for about three days, but it cost me a figernail, and most of my fingernails were broken to nubs. I had let one of my nails grow a little long. That's not a very good idea when doing this stuff.

haven't really been on this site a whole lot here recently with all the drama going on in the different topics. But personally dealing with this thread, I use steel rods or steel pipes (without any coating) and wedge them into the wooden dummy. Requires a little more jow but hey, I haven't broken an arm yet as opposed to a dummy with wooden arms I trained on a couple of years back, which ended up cracking and eventually breaking! You can get them from any Steel manufactor for next to nothing. Just make sure to get non coated pure steel.

Don't use one these days. I want to build one of the suspended dummies for a moving target. I should be able to beat the heck out of one of these! The only problem is one of time and $$.

It helps for me because I train solitary mostly.

At one point I was going to add a shear pin to my dummy. And it would represent a normal persons arm strength.

I made a whole arm once, to practice trapping, but it fell apart after 1 training session.

I'd like to post pictures of my Dummy, if anyone can direct me how.

As, I get more comfortable with my Hung Gar, I am using my dummy more with techniques and not just for conditioning.

The wooden dummy for me has opened up so many hidden techniques in the Wing Chun forms. (As well as other KF forms.) There is an infinite number of possibilities to training with a dummy, closing the gap, body conditioning, and timing (muscle memory).

I've been using the dummy for a while now, but here recently I've been using a bagua dummy just about everyday to hone up on some skills. I've got three types of dummies I play with, as a brother and I build them and sell them occasionally to the public. One dummy is the Wing Tsuen, the other is the Bagua, and the last one is a free hanging dummy with swivels so that it will spin upon forced blocks/and strikes. All are useful and come in handy, the more I play with them the more I learn.
