IP Question

Postby tkdmaster on Sun May 31, 2009 5:52 pm

I have just now passed 100 days of straight training at least twice a day if not 3 days. I attended a seminar of Sifu Lams here in Oxford Ohio years ago. I remember starting but not finishing for whatever reason. I recently ordered bags in December and am on my second case of Jow. My questions are how often do you replace the Mung beans. My gravel bag is worn from the finger strikes mostly....you can see a pattern developing and I don't want to wear it out so I will just flip it over. Also how often do you replace gravel or should I just order new bags. I figured out from the forum that I should put the gravel bag on the iron bag when working it. At first I just had the gravel bag by itself. It feels better on top of the iron one. A session lasts from anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes depending on time constraints. I am in sales so I have a heavy wooden but portable stand I can keep in the back of my car. I stop at parks or secluded areas at lunch or afternoons to keep regular and consistent with practice. So far my hands feel heavy and energized. The skin is thick and the technique feels solid. I am excited for the next 100 days. I have the video and books also. Any advice you could give an old warrior would be most welcome.

i really wouldn't worry about replacing beans or gravel, you should be hitting steel. 100 days is plenty of time to get the hands conditioned for steel. as a matter of fact if i had it to do over, i would have started on steel.instead i started on mung beans, for a couple of monthes then went to gravel for another month or so,then to steel.really the 100 days does not start, until you start hitting steel. that is when you will start to make the real gains.you will see a real difference after 100 days of hitting steel.
are yo u using any type of internal formula?? that is an overlooked item sometimes. it is very beneficial to speeding up progress.

Internal Formula? I have no idea what your thought is? I only use the DDJ from WLE after training...
What do you recommend and how do I get and so on...uses?
Thanks

o.k. first off, i hope you are using jow more than just after your training. you should be using it before, during and after conditioning.
i sent you a link to the internal formula. internals have been used for 100s' of years to further internal energy. look into it. they are very much over looked in internal training. are they nessescary?? no,but they sure do help.

the link is in my post, the reply to your first quesion.
yes the iron will sting, but that is part of it. how many hits do oyu think you are getting in 2-3 min.??? you need to start with at least 50 hits on each of the striking surfaces you are going to condition. do arm swings and qigong apply jow,hit bag, halfway through apply more jow and arm swings, then the last half of the strikes, apply jow,arm swings and qigong. you will see great results after 100 days of hitting steel.

to clarify, the reason i say 50 hits,is because that is a good reference for me. 2-3 min. could differentiate between individuals. so if you get 50-100 hits in 2-3 min. then some one else only gets 10-12 hits, that is not the same. this is just my opinion, but i have had great results with this. so i reccomend going by # of hits.

I started the iron after I warm with the gravel for awhile. I will try the timer and counting the hits. I certainly cannot hit the iron like i do the gravel. The middle knuckle on my left hand stinks and the finger tips on my hands are sensitive where i wince on the iron. I know I am a whimp.... I just continue on a softer scale thinking it will get beteer over time. Thanks for the advise and I will use arm swings in the middle with more jow.

Thanks for the link....I see it now. On it their is what looks to be an external jow in a bag and you mention an internal one also. I didn't see it. Is it included in the kit. Is a tea? I assume you do not use WLE DDJ? If I order the kit does the internal stuff come with it. Sorry for being so inquisitive. New to the journey and want to continue without hindering training.
Thanks,
Rob

I really see the journey way in front of me. On a good day I can strike the Iron for at least 50 times after a 10 minute gravel time for warmup with a break in the middle. It may be 100 if I am patient and use hot water or the roof of my car when in a quiet park(The sun makes it hot). I get in twice a day mid-morning and evening. Some days I just work more on the gravel as i know it's going to be several years of training ahead of me. I can only imagine a day when i can work with the iron for a solid 15 or 20 minutes without a flinch or a second thought of the strike and will it sting or not. I work for the day when I can extend my Chi and be the iron......

Do you always warm up with arm swings? Sometimes my hands feel so full that I just use the mung bag and move on to the others.... No problems....it has been almost 6 months straight without a missed day......

Well it's been over a year now and looking back and reading this old post is funny. I bet I haven't missed less than 10 days this last year and what a change it's been. I remember hitting the iron and how much it hurt and wondering if I would ever be able to do this. Now hitting the iron is the highlight of my day. I still warm up with 2 minutes of bean and then a few on gravel. My gravel bags look like a quilt of patches of athlectic tape overlapping tears and wears in the bags (I have 2 of them). My iron bag is a deep orange as I soak my hands in HOT water to keep energy flowing amongst arm swings. I practice dragon form of Hung Gar to release and direct chi. I have incorporated Punches as well as spear hand and dotting,(some call it chicken beak In Shorin Ryu.) Even after this first year and a few...well alot of bruises at one time or another I feel like I am barely starting the journey. It's been alot of fun and I want to thank Rod Morgan and Dale Dugas for answering my questions and inspiring me to keep on. I am looking forward to the next year to see what changes will come and see my progress inch forward. Keep on practicing and be faithful.
Thanks,
Rob Pace
