Shaolin #5 Video Clip

Postby Raven on Sat Jul 09, 2005 4:05 am

Since I encouraged Zhao to post a video of himself demonstrating Lian Bu, I thought it might be fun to post a video clip of myself. The video was taken at the 2003 UC Berkeley tournament a little over two years ago. I also have a few other competition clips that I might post.

I actually feel slightly embarrassed by this clip since I can see a number of things wrong with it (I only had 3 years experience at the time, you know?), but it's the best one I have. Dan Chisholm took a more recent one of me, but he only caught the second half of the form. In that clip, my moves are more correct, but a bit slower. Interesting.

I know this one is hard to discuss since most people don't know #5... #6 or Tan Tuy would be better. I'll try to get more footage of my sets to post here in the future.

Click here to watch me demonstrate #5 (avi file)

It's a big file. You will probably want to resize it at least to the second highest setting because I go off-screen on the smaller sizes.

Here's the site I used to host the video:
GigaShare.com

As a bonus, here are the movement names for #5 (I got them from my older classmate Gene Ching, who got them from our Sifu):

It's an .avi file... I'm pretty sure Windows Media Player should load it. What happens when you try to download it? It's pretty big, so it will take some time to load.

My computer freezes. Oh yeah, my computer can't download anything because my friend messed it up. Problem solved. I'll try to get that file to work.

Raven, did the judges make a comment on why you got the scores you did?

I was in the Intermediate group that year, so most judges automatically assign a score between 7 and 7.9. To put it in perspective, I was third place that year.

Ah ok, did you limit the range of the movments by any chance? Possibly cause you are taller than some, so as to fit on the area? I'm not so familar with this set but I recall thinking that a bit when you were coming towards the edges.

I don't guess you've got those anywhere else do you? It looks like Gigashare is having a fit currently...

I DL the video but I don't seem to have the codec to play it. I also downloaded the newest codec package for WMP. Not sure why it's not playing.

I can't stream it though, I have Dial Up.

James, you probably need the DivX codec - just Google for it. I have no problem viewing .avi files with WMP.

Raven, thanks for sharing! I like #5 very much. In my school, we do the forms slower and with a lower stance, but it's essentially the same thing. I like the way you guys do it and I'm trying to find the happy medium, so your clip is a great resource. Keep posting! I finished #8 and I'm now doing #4, so if you have those clips, I'd love to see them

P.S. It seems like Gigashare is not very reliable. You can upload your clips at YouSentIt.com - it's pretty easy to use.

URL: I just took another look at the clip and couldn't see any fore-shortened movements... not sure what you meant :P

Princess: At the point this video was taken, speed was one of my main foci. I have a more recent clip of half my performance at the '05 Berkeley tournament. When I compared them, I noticed my moves were cleaner but slightly slower. I got a bit sloppy at some points in the clip I posted here.

I don't have any clips of 8 or 4, but maybe I should record them. :) #6 is another one I should put up here.

I can't find that other site, though. I found www.yousendit.com, but that won't work for our purposes.

Very nicely done Raven!
:)
I couldn't d-load it for the last few days but I just snagged it and am impressed.
I can understand how someone your hieght would wish to focus on speed, especially on techniques like the broom sweep which is likely alot slower when you are taller.

heh, some day I will join the technological revolution and have access to a cam-corder, and when I do i'll tape myself doing some of the BSL forms. I would love the feedback.
Until I have video technology however I shall have to be content to practice untaped. ;)
