Masters of Grappling
By Jose Fraguas Seeing a Japanese koryu bujutsu (classical martial arts) demonstration for the first time can be an exciting and bewildering experience. Sharp swords, exotic weaponry, and ancient armor counterpoint seemingly incomprehensible ritualized movements. It’s all too easy for the event to be reduced to a colorful blur punctuated by a few moments of drama. Yet these demonstrations are an excellent place to study the Japanese ryuha or traditions, and to perhaps even enhanceyour own training—that is, if you’ve got the eyes to see what’s going on. A first step in learning to “see” the koryu is knowing what school you are watching. This “Field Guide” aims to help in that process. The goal is to provide a quick reference rather than an in-depth analysis. It is intended as a tool to enhance your understanding of the classical traditions, and as a companion to demonstrations of these arts, whether live or on video. 350 pages, 7"x10"
