This is a rare example of a truly unique weapon; this staff/chain whip hybrid was most likely crafted by an individual to suit their own particular style and preference.  Like most of our antiques, this piece has an age of approximately 100-200 years.  The short staff that the chain is mounted on would have allowed for far greater defensive ability than the chain itself, as well as adding leverage to offensive movements.  With two hands on the staff, one could have easily swung the chain with great force and still be ready to quickly block.

The wooden shaft is most likely oak or a similar hardwood.  The six-link chain is made of solid iron and is in remarkably good condition...there are only small patches of rust-tinged discoloration.
